Solo Career of Dean Martin
Dean Martin's first solo movie "Ten thousand bedrooms" was a box office failure. He was still popular as a singer but he wanted to be a real actor. He paid half of his former salary to act in a war drama called "The young Lions" which was starred by Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift. He did so because he wanted to learn from these actors. After that the talent Agency realized that they could use Dean Martin in three different ways. Dean Martin can perform in clubs, can sing and can also perform as actor in movies. Martin's first performance was a great success and he got success as an actor in dramas such as "Vincenti Marella" and "Some came running". In the mid years of decade of 60's Dean Martin was known as one of the top actors, a great singer and an excellent club performer. Martin was a good singer but he used to copy singing style of " Bing Croossby " and Perry Como until the time when he developed a singing style of his own. He couldn't read music as many other singers of that time could, yet he had recorded about 100 music albums and more than 600 songs. His famous song "Everybody loves somebody" was placed number one on the music charts in year 1964. His other song "The door is still open to my heart" got sixth place on the charts later in that year. In the year of 1965, Dean Martin's albums such as " The hit sounds of Dean Martin ", " Welcome to my world " and " Gentle on my mind " were of great success. At that time Dean Martin also hosted a TV show in which he invited country performers. In 1966 he was nominated as "Man of the year" by Country Music Association. In the movie " Ocean's eleven " Martin had performed a song called " Ain't that a kick in the head " which didn't get that much popularity at that time but later in 1993 this song had a great revival. |
