The Dean Martin Show

During his years of glory, Dean Martin was the guest of a TV series called the Dean Martin Show that aired from 1965 to 1974 on NBC. It was a comedy show where Martin would sing solos, do gags and have regular star guests invited to sing.

Dean Martin was reluctant when the NBC guys first approached him. He deliberately asked for outrageous conditions, including a very high salary and only to be present one day a week when the show was taped. Surprisingly enough, the NBC accepted. Martin played the part of a drunken and lazy fellow - hence the ever-present glass of "booze" in his hand (his son revealed later on that the "booze" was almost always just apple juice).

The theme song of the show was the Everybody Love Somebody Sometimes song played by Dean Martin. The artist usually played two solos during the show. He also joined his guests in duets often played just for laughs. Sometimes he would try to make his pianist laugh until he lost focus. One of Martin's regular gags was having someone knock from behind the closet door. When he opened the door, a celebrity guest would come out. Sometimes Dean Martin himself didn't know who it was before opening the door. Another regular gag was to put on a song and have the audience guess who the singer was, pretending to run some contest. It was always a song by Frank Sinatra. When no one guessed, Frank Sinatra himself would show up and say that it was him. Then Dean Martin would ceremoniously hand him over the prize - a trip to Los Angeles, where the two artists lived.

Other regular guests apart from Frank Sinatra Charles Nelson Reilly Nipsey Russel and Dom DeLuise, but only during the later seasons. The show always ended with a performance featuring Martin and his guests. Sometimes it was a musical sketch where Dean Martin played the role of a DJ playing old records called Dino Vino. The Dean Martin Show was cancelled in 1974 after running for nine years and 245 episodes.
